Treehouse, Permai Rainforest Resort, Damai (outside Kuching), Borneo

I very much enjoyed the treehouse cabin at the Permai Rainforest Resort. The reviews on Agoda for the ground level lodgings there were not great, but I was extremely pleased with the treetop cabin I stayed at. The Permai Rainforest Resort is in Damai, about 30 km outside Kuching.

The treehouses all are along the forest edge where it meets the beach. You hear the wonderful sound of waves crashing and winds rushing through the forest trees.

The rooms have a full bath and electricity.

They were quite cool, with the shade and wind, but also offered AC if you wished to use it. The cafeteria wasn’t anything fancy but offered tasty food and a decent wifi connection (no wifi is available in the rooms).

You can walk down to the beach from the cafeteria.

I stayed for 2 nights (I would have stayed longer if the cabin was available longer). I did the Mount Santubong hike which was great and very challenging. I have never had such sustained step climbs. I turned back part way up. I have hiked many times with much greater elevation gains but nothing so continuously steep. I’ll post about it soon.

The Permai Rainforest Resort has a forest trail which was nice. The trail didn’t seem incredibly well marked to me but I enjoyed the walk even though I don’t think I managed to follow the trail (it was hard to tell but I think I was off it at several points). If I did follow the trail it is really hard to follow and the time is very underestimated.

Permai Rainforest Resort is about a 10 minute walk to the Damai Center (which has very little, but does have a couple places to eat) and the is right across the street from the Sarawak cultural village (worth a visit, if you like these kind of things – it was one of the best I have seen).
